Magicavoxel Vox Exporter

by Harry McKenzie in Addons

Download the zip file that comes with your purchase and install the addon via Edit > Preferences > Add-ons. Click Install and select the zip file you downloaded. Search for the term vox and tick the checkbox next left to the Addon name Import-Export: MagicaVoxel Exporter. Don't forget to save your preferences using Save Preferences button so you don't have to tick the checkbox again the next time you open Blender.

  • Attention!  If you are a Mac OS or a Linux user you have to do an additional step after installation. Please see at bottom of this page!

Before you use this feature, it is recommended to switch to the Scripting workspace tab so you can see the processing output, and please take note of the dimension of the object. The larger the object in dimensions, the more voxel detail you can produce, but it may take longer to process. While it may seem that the user interface is not responding or in a hang state, rest assured it is processing. Kindly be patient and await the completion of the process; the output will be visible in the Info Editor.

You will see the vox option under File > Export > MagicaVoxel (.vox) and the qb option under File > Export > Qubicle (.qb). Just simply select the object(s) in Blender that you want to export to voxel format then export. Please experiment first with smaller sized objects that have lesser vertices to get a feel for the addon. It can take from seconds to several minutes depending on how complex your object is. Complexity is compounded by more vertices and faces. So it is always a good idea to try to decimate and reduce the amount of vertices before using this feature. Please be patient. Be careful for objects that exceed 100 meters in dimension. The bigger the object, the more voxels, and the longer it will take to finish processing. The first export may take longer than the succeeding exports. So try the export first with the default cube. It may take longer than normal for the first time export.

You can adjust some settings for the resulting vox file. Hover over each item to see a tooltip for its function. Be careful with the Voxformat Scale. First experiment with lower values like 1 and then 2 and up to see how the number of voxels add up in the resulting output. Don't immediately go to 10 or 100! Keep in mind that increasing this value will result in higher voxel resolution but will also extend the time required to generate the vox file. It could take up to several minutes depending on how fast your computer is so please be patient.

Now you can directly open the generated .vox file in MagicaVoxel or VoxEdit or the generated .qb file in Qubicle. Please don't hesitate to message us for issues so we can address them promptly. Enjoy!

MAC OS and LINUX post Installation

Please take note of the voxconvert version, which is an executable binary used inside of the Vox Exporter addon, because this information may be needed after installation. For example, for the Vox Exporter version 1.0.5, the voxconvert version used is  0.0.28  which can be found inside the description of the addon under menu Edit > Preferences > Add-ons.

Also please take note of the Blender version used. You can get the version by navigating to menu Help > Manual which opens a browser. In this example the version is  4.0  version. This information may also be needed right after addon installation.

MAC OS: Important Instructions for Mac users after Installation

If you downloaded the new voxility-pro-v1.0.10 version then there is no more need for this step, it should work right away. If not, here are instructions to follow after you have installed the addon on Blender running on Mac OS. Due to this issue described here, you have to manually set the third-party vox-converter binary file as executable. To do this, simply do:

  1. Hold down Command and press Space and type in terminal then press Enter or open terminal window using this tutorial
  2. Copy the following command text. Modify the text to adjust to your Blender version and the voxconvert version if applicable:
    cd; cd Library/Application\ Support/Blender/4.0/scripts/addons/vox_exporter/voxconvert-executable/0.0.28/darwin/vengi-voxconvert.app/Contents/MacOS/; chmod +x vengi-voxconvert
  3. Then paste the new modified text and press Enter

Read the terminal console output and make sure there are no errors. Now you are good to go. Let us know if you have any issues. Enjoy!

LINUX: Important Instructions for Linux users after Installation

Here are instructions to follow after you have installed the addon on Blender running on Linux. Open the terminal and Copy the following command text. Modify the text to adjust to your Blender version and the voxconvert version if applicable.

cd ~/.config/blender/4.0/scripts/addons/vox_exporter/voxconvert-executable/0.0.28/linux/

Then paste the new modified text into the terminal and press Enter. Make sure the path is correct and there are no errors. Then copy each line and paste into terminal and press Enter. Read the terminal outputs because you may need to type in  y  for yes and press Enter to confirm installation.

sudo dpkg -i vengi-shared_0.0.28.0-1_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i vengi-voxconvert_0.0.28.0-1_amd64.deb
sudo apt-get install -f
vengi-voxconvert --version

Read the output for each line you execute and make sure there are no errors. If all is good you will see the last line print out the version. Close Blender and open again. Enjoy!
