Layered Materials

by Stéphane in Surfacing

Layered materials is a growing library of procedural materials and smart layers

Simply add dirt, snow, mud, scratches, dead leaves, puddles, rain effect ... alien parasite and much more on your materials whether they are procedural or PBR.

A WORKFLOW  DESIGNED WITH SIMPLICITY IN MIND
Here in this exemple let's add edge wear, dust and mud :

Let's "drag and drop" somme streaks on this stone wall material, then add an alien parasite layer, just connect the displacement outputs with the inputs, adjust with a height mask, and that's it !

Let's take a look closer to some of the 48 layers with the...

...SCI-FI LAYERS

Bloated parasite :

Puddles (it will adapt to the height map of the base material) :

Rain (on objects, windows) :

Incandescence 🔥 and Frost ❄ :

And much more...

MASKS

Layered materials comes with 11 masks which you can use to adjust exactly where you want the layer to appear or not.

With the vertex paint mask you can paint your mask directly on the mesh using the color black in the vertex paint mode (no need for UV unwrap as it use the vertices instead of an image) :

BONUS : VOLUMETRICS

LM comes with 5 volumetrics that you will be able to drag and drop directly into your scenes like this stylized candle fire below :

TOOLS

The asset library comes with 2 tools :
  1. Randomize per object node : With these node you will be able to randomize values, or the color of different objects with the same material in order to create variety.
  2. Height map mixer node : With the layers you can directly connect the displacements together, but you will probably need to generate a new height map with all the layers you want.

Here is an overview list of the library :

So, in brief what's inside :

An asset library containing more than 75 nodes ready to be combined, even with PBR materials :
